Govt mulling advice to impose federal excise duty on sugar

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The federal government is taking into account a suggestion to impose Federal Excise Duty (FED) on per kg sugar, Dunya News reported here on Thursday.

The suggestions of imposing the tax have been sent to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif; and the tax could be imposed by bringing changes to the tax law, sources said.

It has been expected that Rs3 to Rs4 tax will be levied on per kg sugar. The advice has been prepared by Finance Minister, FBR chairman, and finance secretary.

Common consumer will be affected by this scheme of imposition of Rs4 to Rs3 FED on per kg tax. The FED and sales tax advice has been dispatched to the PM for final approval.

Finance Minister Ali Pervaiz has said initially there is no plan to impose sales tax and FED on sugar, adding these are suggestions, and there is a possibility to bring changes to the tax law for imposition of sales tax and FED on sugar.
