Power Division moves to boost generation as electricity demand surges

Summary Rising temperatures have increased electricity demand, prompting Pakistan’s Power Division to seek more LNG supply to boost generation and prevent potential power shortages nationwide.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan’s Power Division has initiated measures to increase electricity generation as rising temperatures drive up power demand across the country.

According to official sources, the division has written to the Petroleum Division seeking enhanced supply of Liquefied Natural Gas to support power production.

In its communication, the Power Division requested the provision of 400 MMCFD of gas, stressing that LNG supply has become essential to maintain electricity generation levels during peak summer demand.

Officials warned that the intensifying heatwave could widen the gap between electricity demand and supply if timely measures are not taken. They noted that LNG-based plants have a generation capacity of up to 6,000 megawatts, and delays in activating these facilities could lead to an uncontrolled shortfall.

The letter also highlighted that generating electricity through spot LNG cargoes is more cost-effective compared to diesel and furnace oil. A lack of LNG supply, it said, would increase reliance on expensive fuels, potentially placing a significant burden on consumers through higher monthly fuel adjustment charges.

The Power Division has also shared demand and supply projections for the coming weeks, while K-Electric has separately informed authorities about its LNG requirements.

Authorities are aiming to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply and minimise the risk of load shedding as temperatures continue to rise.
