Summary Punjab Assembly speaker Malik Ahmad Khan suspended an agricultural tax notification, asserting only the assembly can impose taxes and ordering a legal review within 15 days.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, has suspended a notification related to the collection of agricultural tax, declaring it invalid through an executive order.

During a session of the Punjab Assembly, the speaker issued a ruling stating that the authority to impose taxes rests solely with the assembly and cannot be exercised by government officials.

He maintained that no executive authority, including the Board of Revenue, has the legal power to impose any form of tax, adding that such a notification undermines the privileges of the assembly.

Malik Ahmad Khan directed the standing committee on legislation to review taxes imposed by executive authorities, while instructing the legal committee to submit a report to the assembly within 15 days.

Following the ruling, members of the assembly from both treasury and opposition benches welcomed the decision, applauding the speaker’s move.
