Summary Pakistan’s weekly inflation rose 0.65 per cent, while the annual rate stood at 8.32pc, with onions, fuel, flour and chicken among items becoming costlier.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Inflationary pressures intensified in Pakistan during the first week of September as weekly inflation increased by 0.65 per cent, with prices of 17 essential commodities rising, according to official statistics.

Data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed that inflation measured through the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) stood 8.32pc higher on a year-on-year basis during the week.

Of the essential commodities monitored, prices of 17 items increased, seven declined, while 27 remained unchanged.

Onions recorded the sharpest increase, becoming 26.30pc more expensive during the week. Chicken prices increased by 0.85pc, while potatoes rose by 0.96pc and garlic by 0.18pc.

The price of mustard oil increased by 0.13pc, while mash pulse became 0.67pc more expensive.

Fuel prices also contributed to inflationary pressure. Petrol prices increased by 0.90pc, while high-speed diesel registered a 0.09pc increase during the period under review.

Flour, one of the most important household staples, became 0.88pc more expensive during the week.

However, consumers received some relief from falling prices of several food items.

According to the PBS figures, sugar prices declined by 0.18pc and gur by 0.05pc. Egg prices dropped by 0.11pc, while gram pulse became 0.6pc cheaper.

Moong pulse prices fell by 0.69pc, while bananas recorded a comparatively larger decline of 2.54pc during the week.

The latest figures indicate renewed short-term inflationary pressure on household budgets, particularly due to increases in food staples and fuel prices.
