The playback singer rejects allegations
(Web Desk) - Indian playback singer Udit Narayan has landed in legal trouble as his first wife, Ranjana Jha, has filed a case against him.
She accused him of property misuse and denial of marital rights.
Ranjana’s lawyer, Ajay Kumar, revealed that due to her age and health issues, she wishes to reconcile with Udit Narayan.
However, the singer has declined to resume cohabitation.
The couple married in 1984 but grew apart after Udit rose to fame in 1988.
Their relationship became strained and in 2006, Ranjana sought help from the Bihar Women’s Commission.
Following this, Udit promised financial support and housing.
Despite this, his first wife claimed the singer later stopped fulfilling those commitments.
In response to her recent legal petition, Udit Narayan accused Ranjana of attempting to extort money and mislead the court.
He stated that, per a 2013 agreement with the Bihar Women’s Commission, he had been providing her with Rs. 15,000 (£135) monthly.
According to him, the amount was later increased to Rs. 25,000 (£230) in 2021.
He also claimed to have given her a house worth Rs. 1 crore (£91,000), agricultural land valued at Rs. 5 lakh (£4,500), as well as jewellery.
Ranjana, however, disputed these claims. She alleged that Udit withheld Rs. 18 lakh (£16,400) from the sale of property in Nepal.
In addition to this, she alleged that the singer consistently denied acknowledging her as his wife.
She also stated that when she tried to meet him in Mumbai, he accused her of harassment.
The case gained further attention after human rights lawyer SK Jha escalated the matter.
He filed petitions with both the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC).
Jha argued that, under the Indian Constitution and the Hindu Marriage Act, remarriage without formally ending the first marriage is illegal.
He asserted that Udit’s actions violated women’s rights and constituted a breach of human rights.
Udit Narayan has yet to comment publicly on the latest developments.
However, the public already seems convinced that the singer is in the wrong.
A user commented: “What a shameless man he turned out to be.”
Another wrote: “Bloody perv! Deserves a few slaps that would rock his wig back and forth!”
One questioned: “How many wives does this dude have?”
This is not the first time Udit Narayan has faced controversy.
He recently made headlines when a video of him kissing a female fan went viral, drawing mixed reactions from the public.
