LAHORE (Web Desk) – Today (Tuesday) marks the 32nd death anniversary of the legendary revolutionary poet, Habib Jalib, whose words continue to resonate with the masses.

Born on March 24, 1928, in Hoshiarpur, Indian Punjab, Jalib migrated to Pakistan following Partition in 1947. He began his career in journalism, working for Daily Imroz in Karachi.

Jalib’s poetry, known for its simplicity yet profound impact, captured the hearts of many. He is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most influential Urdu poets, using his verse to challenge authoritarian regimes.

He fiercely opposed the military rule of General Ayub Khan and Ziaul Haq, often taking to the streets of Lahore in protest, including demonstrations against the Hudood Ordinance alongside women activists.

Even decades after his passing, Jalib remains a symbol of resistance, earning him the title of people’s poet. Despite facing financial hardships throughout his life, he never compromised on his principles, refusing numerous lucrative offers.

Some of his most famous poetry collections include Sar-e-Maqtal, Zikr Behte Khoon Ka, Gumbad-e-Bedar, and Kulyaat-e-Habib Jalib.

The celebrated poet passed away on March 12, 1993, in Lahore, but his legacy lives on.
