Summary Pakistan reported its first rabies death of 2026 after a 42-year-old woman died following an untreated mongoose bite
KARACHI (Web Desk) - Pakistan has reported its first rabies-related death of 2026 linked to a mongoose bite, health officials confirmed.
According to a spokesperson for Indus Hospital, a 42-year-old woman from Jacobabad died after contracting rabies following a mongoose attack.
Rabies Programme Manager Aftab Gohar said the woman was bitten by a mongoose nearly two weeks before her death but did not seek medical treatment or receive post-exposure vaccination.
Health experts noted that while rabies cases are most commonly associated with dog bites, the virus can also be transmitted through the bites of infected wild animals, including mongooses.
Officials described the case as the first reported rabies fatality in Pakistan this year resulting from a mongoose bite and urged the public to seek immediate medical care after any animal bite to prevent infection.
