KARACHI (Dunya News) – Another citizen has died of rabies in Karachi amid a rising number of stray dog bite incidents in the city, with a 24-year-old man from Qayyumabad dying while undergoing treatment at Jinnah Hospital.

According to hospital sources, the victim, identified as Shahryar, was bitten by a stray dog two months ago but did not receive a rabies prevention vaccine after the incident. He was brought to the emergency department of Jinnah Hospital today in critical condition.

Sources said Shahryar had been suffering from symptoms including irritability, restlessness and fear of water for the past week. Doctors treated him on suspicion of rabies encephalitis, while the neuromedicine team also examined him. Sedative medication was administered in view of his medical condition, but he could not survive.

According to hospital sources, 18 people have died of rabies in Karachi so far this year. Of these, 11 deaths were reported at Indus Hospital and seven at Jinnah Hospital.

Official figures show that more than 30,000 dog-bite cases have been reported in Karachi this year, once again raising questions over measures to control stray dogs and prevent the spread of rabies in the city.

Medical experts said that in case of a dog bite, it is essential to immediately wash the wound and seek medical attention. They stressed that timely vaccination is crucial for preventing rabies.
