The petitioner contended that PECA 2025 (an amended law) was against Article 19-A of Constitution
LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Lahore High Court on Monday sought replies from respondents on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s plea seeking revocation of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2025.
Justice Farooq Haider heard the case on the petition filed by Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar. Advocate Azhar Siddique appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
The petitioner contended that the PECA 2025 (an amended law) was against Article 19-A of the Constitution. “It doesn't define what fake news is,” said the petitioner who expressed fear that it would be used with political motives on the pretext of fake news.
The journalists would now be asked to reveal their sources which, he pleaded, should not be done.
The petitioner pleaded to declare the PECA null and void while requesting the court to suspend any actions taken under the controversial act until the court made a decision.
The lawyer said the attorney general should be summoned through notice as the petitioner had challenged sections of the law.
Justice Haider said it was not a rule but a precedent. The judge, however, issued notices to the respondents and sought all related cases clubbed.
The court adjourned the hearing till March 5.
