Lahore tops global list of most polluted cities amid smog crisis

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Lahore has once again topped the global list of most polluted cities, as toxic smog and thick fog continue to engulf major parts of Punjab.

According to an international air quality monitoring website, Lahore recorded an alarming 327 AQI, placing it at the top among the world’s most polluted cities.

Karachi followed closely with 282 AQI, while data from the Punjab Environment Department showed that Kasur was the province’s most polluted city at 348 AQI. In other cities, Gujranwala recorded 341 AQI, and Sheikhupura registered 278 AQI, indicating hazardous air conditions across the region.

Officials have warned that the poor air quality poses serious health risks, especially for children, elderly citizens, and people with respiratory issues. Residents have been urged to stay indoors whenever possible and use face masks outdoors.

Along with smog, dense fog severely affected visibility in several areas, disrupting road travel. Motorway M-5 was closed from Multan Shershah Interchange to Zahir Pir, while sections of Motorway M-1 from Peshawar to Burhan were also shut to prevent accidents.

A spokesperson for Motorway Police said visibility on the affected routes dropped to dangerous levels, prompting the suspension of traffic. Citizens were advised to use fog lights, maintain safe distance, and prefer daytime travel, as safe travel hours in foggy weather are between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

Authorities said the closures were precautionary steps taken to protect lives and property, urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
