QUETTA (Dunya News) - The Election Commission has approved 2,870 nomination papers for the upcoming local government elections in Quetta, scheduled to be held on 28 December.

According to the Provincial Election Commissioner, scrutiny of nomination papers has been completed, with a total of 2,870 candidates cleared to contest. Meanwhile, 329 candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers during the allotted withdrawal period.

Following the withdrawal phase, 2,541 candidates remain in the electoral race for various local government seats across the provincial capital. Out of 641 total wards, competitive contests will take place in 515 wards, where multiple candidates are vying for public support.

The Election Commissioner further revealed that in 108 wards, only a single candidate filed nomination papers, meaning they will be elected unopposed. However, 18 wards received no nomination papers at all, leaving those seats vacant and requiring further administrative steps at a later stage.

The local government elections in Quetta are being viewed as a significant step toward strengthening grassroots democracy in Balochistan. With thousands of candidates in the running, the electoral process is expected to be closely followed by political observers and citizens alike.
