KARACHI (Muhammad Ashhad) – The year 2025 in the Sindh Assembly was marked by moderate legislative activity, extended debates on resolutions, and frequent political unrest that kept the house in the news.

Legislative achievements

Throughout the year, members of the ruling party and the opposition alternated between confrontation and cooperation. Several significant bills were passed, covering drug control, traffic regulations, amendments in universities, policing, and public safety. In addition, legislative measures concerning the local government system, workers’ and domestic employees’ rights, and administrative and digital reforms also featured in the Assembly’s agenda.

Resolutions and debates

The Assembly witnessed discussions on canals, the 18th Constitutional Amendment, the NFC Award, Pakistan-India tensions, and the establishment of a constitutional court. These resolutions reflected both consensus and contention among lawmakers.

Attendance and political tensions

Even after 22 months into the term, four members from two parties had yet to take their oaths, including JI leader Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman and GDA’s Pir Syed Muhammad

Rashid Shah Rashdi. Opposition members claimed they were frequently denied opportunities to present their positions, while government representatives maintained that proceedings were conducted according to constitutional rules, ensuring legislative continuity.

Protests and farewells

The year also saw repeated walkouts, protests, and verbal clashes between government and opposition members. During 2025, current and former Assembly members Agha Siraj Khan Durrani, Aftab Shaban Mirani, and Lal Bux Bhutto passed away. Condolence resolutions were presented in the house, and following Agha Siraj Khan Durrani’s death, his son Agha Shehbaz Durrani was elected from PS-9 Shikarpur.

Despite political disagreements and periodic disruptions, the Sindh Assembly continued lawmaking and parliamentary proceedings throughout 2025, although questions remain about member participation and the style of debate in the house.
