Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government enforces 60-day Section 144 ban on illegal mining and placer gold extraction along Indus and Kabul rivers in multiple districts.
PESHAWAR (Web Desk) - The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has imposed Section 144 across several districts to curb illegal mining and placer gold extraction along the banks of the Indus River and Kabul River.
According to an official notification issued by the Department of Home and Tribal Affairs, the 60-day ban will be enforced in Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, Karak and adjoining areas.
The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Home Ikrāmullah Khan, stated that the decision was taken in light of reports from relevant departments and consultations held during the 37th provincial cabinet meeting.
Authorities said illegal mining along riverbanks was causing severe environmental degradation, contaminating water, destroying natural landscapes and posing risks to the health and safety of local communities.

Officials also expressed concerns that such activities could trigger law and order issues, disputes among local groups, illegal transportation of extracted materials and fuel smuggling linked to excavation operations.
The government warned that certain organised groups possess financial resources and may resist enforcement actions, potentially endangering both civilians and law enforcement personnel.
The provincial cabinet has directed the Minerals Department to launch coordinated operations against illegal mining, with district administrations and police instructed to provide full support. Additional personnel will be deployed if required.
Under the notification, district authorities and police have been granted full powers to act in accordance with the law, including confiscation of machinery, vehicles and equipment used in violations.
Officials warned that strict action would be taken against violators under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code.
