(Dunya News) - U.S. President Donald Trump chaired a high-level meeting in the White House Situation Room to review the Iran war and Middle East situation.

According to reports, the meeting was attended by U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance, who previously led the American delegation in Islamabad talks and is expected to head upcoming negotiations as well.

Discussions during the session focused on developments related to the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran. Sources said that President Trump held at least one phone call with Syed Asim Munir, as well as with Iranian officials, during the meeting.

The development comes just days before the expiry of a 15-day ceasefire period between the United States and Iran. Trump had earlier indicated that a potential deal could be reached within the week, although no new date for formal negotiations has been announced so far.

Meanwhile, the White House has not issued an official statement regarding the Situation Room meeting. Senior officials, including the secretary of state, defense secretary, treasury secretary, White House chief of staff, special envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA director, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were also in attendance.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Iran “got a little cute … they wanted to close up the Strait again,” adding that the country “can’t blackmail us.”

He said the US is continuing talks with Iran and that he expects to know by the end of the day whether the parties will move forward with a deal.

On Feb. 28, the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran, and Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.

The war has been on hold since April 8, when Pakistan mediated a two-week ceasefire.

Washington and Tehran held talks in Pakistan last weekend, and efforts for another session in Islamabad are underway.
