UNITED NATIONS (Dunya News) - Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, permanent representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, on Tuesday said that the Palestinian issue is the root cause of instability in the Middle East.

Speaking during the UN Security Council Open Debate on the Situation in the Middle East, Asim Iftikhar said that continued Israeli occupation of the Arab lands and the unresolved question of Palestine are the causes of instability in the region.

Asim Iftikhar said that realization of a Palestinian state, through two-State solution, is the only pathway to a just, lasting and comprehensive peace for all in the region.

He added that despite a ceasefire in Gaza, more than 800 Palestinians have been martyred in Israeli attacks.

Asim Iftikhar called for the early completion of the second phase of the Gaza peace plan. He said that settler violence in the West Bank and the expansion of illegal settlements are alarming. He said that Israel’s discriminatory measures are strengthening a system based on racial discrimination.

The Pakistani envoy also stated that ongoing incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque and violations of holy sites must be stopped immediately. He added that more than 2,000 civilians have been killed or injured due to Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

He further said that Pakistan will continue to support that objective, while reaffirming its unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just cause.
