ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally launched the “Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme” and distributed bank cheques among eligible individuals who qualified for housing loans.

Under the scheme, loans of up to Rs10 million are being provided on easy terms.

The initiative will be implemented across all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the successful applicants of the scheme and said that participation in the ceremony of the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme is a matter of great pleasure for him. He said that providing shelter is a sacred responsibility.

He added that for the state or any government, providing a roof over the head of the common man is of great importance and remains a top priority of his government, stating “home is one’s own,” and calling the event memorable.

The prime minister further said that under the scheme, loans will be given for 20 years.

He said that significant efforts were made to make the scheme successful and that 50,000 houses will be constructed in the first year, with a target of 5 lakh houses in the coming years.

He said the scheme was launched in consultation with government stakeholders and the private sector.

He also mentioned that in today’s ceremony, a driver named Ghous Hussain also received a loan to build a house.

He added that a large number of people without homes will benefit and he will personally review the progress on a monthly basis.

The prime minister said the construction sector drives the economy.

He added that banks participating in the scheme will be awarded medals on August 14. He also said the government is encouraging exporters, has appointed renowned exporters as ambassadors, and issued blue passports for two years.
