NEW YORK (Dunya News) – Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to further strengthen economic cooperation and expand strategic engagement following a high-level meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on the sidelines of diplomatic engagements in New York.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the two leaders reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the pace of cooperation across multiple sectors, particularly defence and strategic coordination.

The discussions also reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to the principles of the United Nations Charter, with the ministers stressing the importance of sovereignty, territorial integrity and respect for international norms.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said both sides highlighted the growing importance of ensuring an effective and influential voice for the Global South within an evolving international system. The leaders underscored the need for a more balanced and equitable global order and exchanged views on challenges affecting regional and international stability.

The meeting reflected the increasingly close diplomatic understanding between Islamabad and Baku, with both countries maintaining regular engagement on regional and global issues. Pakistan and Azerbaijan have in recent years expanded cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic channels into broader economic and strategic areas.

Both ministers also expressed satisfaction over the continued momentum in bilateral cooperation and acknowledged the progress achieved through sustained political engagement and high-level exchanges.

During the discussions, Pakistan and Azerbaijan agreed to pursue greater economic benefits through proposed preferential trade and transit trade arrangements. The move is expected to enhance commercial links and create new opportunities for trade expansion between the two countries.

The leaders also explored ways to increase collaboration in the energy sector, particularly in liquefied natural gas cooperation and broader energy partnerships. Expanding energy cooperation has remained a key area of focus in recent bilateral discussions as both countries seek to strengthen economic connectivity and diversify partnerships.

According to the Foreign Office, the two sides also noted that relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan have continued to gain strength under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, with both governments showing commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation across several sectors.
