(Web Desk) - Pakistan has called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to military hostilities in Lebanon, expressing deep concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the country during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Addressing the council, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said the situation in Lebanon was evolving into a serious humanitarian crisis and posed a threat to regional stability.

He noted that conditions on the ground continued to worsen despite existing ceasefire arrangements, warning that ongoing military operations and incursions into Lebanese territory were exacerbating tensions and endangering civilian lives.

The Pakistani envoy said millions of people had been affected by the conflict, with many displaced from their homes and facing severe shortages of essential services and humanitarian assistance.

Ahmad condemned attacks on medical personnel, humanitarian workers and civilian infrastructure, describing such incidents as grave violations of international humanitarian law. He urged the international community to respond swiftly and effectively to prevent further suffering.

He also expressed regret over the damage caused to Lebanon's historical and cultural heritage, warning that continued destruction would further undermine peace and stability in the region.

Reaffirming Pakistan's support for Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence, Ahmad said Islamabad stood firmly behind all efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.

He stressed the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and called on all parties to honour their ceasefire commitments.

He urged the international community to move beyond statements and take concrete measures to prevent further escalation in the Middle East and pave the way for a sustainable peace.
