ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have stressed that climate change poses a major threat to public health, economic stability and food security, urging stronger efforts to protect the environment and address growing climate challenges.
In his message on World Environment Day, President Zardari emphasized the importance of environmental protection at both national and global levels, noting that Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate risks despite contributing relatively little to global emissions.
He expressed concern over the rapid melting of glaciers, recurring floods and increasing heatwaves, calling for urgent measures to improve water management, reduce waste and protect natural resources.
The president also highlighted the need to preserve forests, promote biodiversity and accelerate renewable energy projects. He said that youth, the media and civil society must play an active role in environmental protection efforts.
President Zardari stressed the importance of making environmental protection a central pillar of national policy and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to international cooperation and climate action. He said ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for future generations is a shared responsibility.

The prime minister said floods, droughts and the rapid melting of glaciers reflect the harsh reality of climate change, adding that Pakistan is among the countries most severely affected by its impacts.
He noted that environmental degradation has resulted in significant human and economic losses and stressed the need for stronger commitment and joint action at individual, governmental and international levels.
