ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan’s lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar has submitted written arguments in a case related to the alleged solitary confinement of Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
Safdar described the report submitted by the Adiala Jail superintendent as contrary to the facts and misleading. He asked the court to appoint a judicial assistant, local commission or amicus curiae to independently assess the situation.
The lawyer requested that the commission meet Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, after which the court should seek an assessment report. He also asked the court to summon both prisoners and record their statements regarding their alleged solitary confinement.
Safdar said the court could also record their statements through video link. He proposed forming a board comprising an expert, a state representative and representatives of the petitioners. The board, he said, should visit Central Jail Adiala, inspect relevant facilities and records, and submit an independent report concerning the treatment of prisoners in isolation.
The written arguments also sought access to video-link communication facilities for Imran Khan, similar to the facility provided by the Punjab chief minister for prisoners. The lawyer requested that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi be provided with books and television facilities.
Safdar said Imran Khan's legal team is representing him in more than 300 cases and called for lawyers to be allowed to meet him without obstruction in accordance with jail rules.
He also requested that regular weekly meetings between prisoners and their family members and friends be ensured under the applicable jail regulations. The lawyer asked for clear directions to the Adiala Jail superintendent to facilitate such meetings without unnecessary restrictions or obstacles.
The written arguments further seek the release of Imran Khan's medical reports and complete medical record, including the provision of the medical record to the court.
According to the arguments, the Adiala Jail superintendent allegedly ignored court directions and submitted an incomplete report. Safdar said the report, which was only one and a half pages long, did not address the serious concerns and issues raised in the case.
He argued that the movement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi could not be described as unrestricted, claiming that both prisoners were not permitted to leave their designated areas.
The written arguments submitted by Safdar comprise 19 pages. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro had sought the written arguments in the case.
