LAHORE (Dunya News) – Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has received the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in Oman for the Punjab government’s flagship housing initiative, Apni Chhat Apna Ghar.

The international recognition comes for a programme designed to help eligible residents secure affordable homes across the province. The initiative was officially launched on August 21, 2024, with implementation planned over four and a half years.

The award was welcomed by senior Punjab government figures, who described the recognition as a significant moment for Pakistan and an acknowledgement of the work behind the housing programme.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the honour represented global recognition of Maryam Nawaz’s vision and efforts to provide ordinary families with secure housing, dignity and greater economic stability.

According to Aurangzeb, more than 200,000 homes have already been delivered across Punjab through the initiative. She said the programme was changing lives by creating greater security and opportunities for families.

The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme was launched to provide affordable houses and apartments to eligible people throughout Punjab. The initiative particularly targets low-income residents who are living in rented accommodation or informal settlements and want to move into homes of their own.

Information published on the programme’s official website says the scheme is intended to help such families obtain ownership of residential properties, addressing one of the major challenges faced by households without permanent housing.

Aurangzeb described the award as a proud moment for Punjab and Pakistan, saying the recognition reflected the international significance of the housing initiative.

Punjab Education Minister Sikandar Hayat also praised the recognition, highlighting the role of Housing Minister Bilal Yaseen in implementing the chief minister’s vision.

Hayat said the honour acknowledged the commitment, dedication and responsibility involved in delivering the programme and praised the work undertaken to turn the housing vision into reality.
