LISBON (Web Desk) - Funeral of Prince Karim al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community, was held at Lisbon on Saturday. He passed away at the age of 88.

He will be buried in Aswan, Egypt, tomorrow.

Pakistan is observing a national day of mourning today, with flags at half-mast.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb attended the funeral, conveying condolences from Pakistan’s leadership. He also praised the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) for its contributions to Pakistan.

Following Prince Karim’s passing, Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan was named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili community.

Born in Switzerland, Prince Karim grew up in Nairobi and graduated from Harvard with a degree in Islamic History. He became Imam at 20, succeeding his grandfather in 1957.

Renowned for his welfare efforts in Asia and Africa through AKDN, he received 44 international awards, including Nishan-i-Imtiaz (1970) and Nishan-i-Pakistan (1983) for his contributions to Pakistan.
