ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb is set to present the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27 in the National Assembly on Friday at 3 p.m., with the total outlay expected to be around Rs17.5 trillion.

According to sources, the government is likely to set a tax revenue target of Rs15.267 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year. A major portion of the budget, estimated at Rs7.824 trillion, has been allocated for debt servicing, while defence spending is expected to be around Rs3 trillion.

The budget is also expected to include relief measures for government employees, with proposals under consideration for an increase in salaries and pensions. In addition, the government is aiming to generate Rs1.727 trillion through the petroleum levy during the next fiscal year.

Sources said the government is likely to set an export target of $32.8 billion and an import target of $70 billion as part of its broader economic strategy.

Development spending is expected to focus on the completion of ongoing projects, with no major new development schemes likely to be announced in the upcoming budget.

The government is also considering the withdrawal of tax exemptions currently available in the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), a move that could broaden the tax base and enhance revenue collection.

CABINET MEETING

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a meeting of the federal cabinet at Parliament House ahead of the budget presentation. The cabinet is expected to approve the budget proposals after receiving a detailed briefing from Finance Minister Aurangzeb on its key features and priorities before the budget is formally presented in parliament.
