RAWALPINDI (APP) - Government employees in Punjab on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the provincial government for announcing a 7pc increase in salaries in the budget, describing it as a positive step amid challenging economic conditions.

Talking to APP, several employees said that the raise was not entirely satisfactory but was acceptable under the current fiscal constraints. They noted that the increase had been aligned with the federal budget, adding that they would accept the decision in view of the broader economic situation.

They, however, said the raise was modest compared to the prevailing inflation, which continued to decline in purchasing power.

The employees urged the government to take effective measures to control inflation so that salaried individuals could manage their household expenses.

Moreover, the employees also called for a significant reduction in petroleum prices, saying that relief in fuel costs, coupled with salary adjustments and inflation control, would make it easier for an average government servant to sustain daily expenses.

Separately, retired employees of the Punjab government demanded the authorities to revise the pension increase at least in line with the federal government’s decision and raise it to 7% to provide meaningful relief to pensioners.
