LAHORE (Dunya News) – Today marks the 8th death anniversary of Bano Qudsia, one of Pakistan’s most celebrated literary icons. Admirers, literary enthusiasts, and scholars are commemorating her invaluable contributions to Urdu literature.
Born on November 28, 1928, in Ferozepur, India, Bano Qudsia migrated to Pakistan following the partition.
From a young age, she exhibited a passion for storytelling, penning short stories as early as the fifth grade.
She pursued her education at Kinnaird College, Lahore, and later earned a master’s degree in Urdu from Government College University (GCU), Lahore, in 1951.
Bano Qudsia was married to renowned writer Ashfaq Ahmed, a partnership that greatly influenced the literary landscape of Pakistan. Together, they shaped the country's intellectual discourse through their profound works.
Her acclaimed literary pieces include Na Kabilay Zikar, Bazgasht, Amar Bail, and Dast Basta. However, it was her magnum opus, Raja Gidh that cemented her status as a literary powerhouse, earning both national and international recognition.
Her thought-provoking play Aadhi Baat is hailed as a classic, alongside other notable works like Aatish-i-Zer-i-Paa, Aik Din, Chahar Chaman, Footpath Ki Ghaas, and Hawa Kay Naam.
Bano Qudsia’s contributions to Urdu literature were honored with prestigious awards, including the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2003 and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2010.
She passed away on February 4, 2017, in Lahore at the age of 88, leaving behind a rich literary legacy that continues to inspire generations.
