Summary Punjab government has proposed increasing the age limit for vice chancellor appointments in public medical universities from 65 to 75 years under a new bill.

LAHORE (Duyan  News) – The Punjab government has decided to increase the maximum age limit for the appointment of vice chancellors in public sector medical universities from 65 years to 75 years, according to an official legislative proposal.

The decision has been incorporated in the Public Sector Medical Universities (Amendment) Bill 2026, which was presented in the Punjab Assembly earlier this week and subsequently referred to the Standing Committee on Higher Education for further review.

Under the proposed amendment, the age eligibility criteria for vice chancellors of seven major medical universities in the province would be revised significantly, allowing senior academics to serve in leadership roles until the age of 75.

The universities included in the proposed changes are the University of Health Sciences Lahore, King Edward Medical University, Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Faisalabad Medical University, Nishtar Medical University, Rawalpindi Medical University, and the University of Child Health Sciences Lahore.

In addition to the revised age limit, the draft legislation also stipulates that candidates for the position of vice chancellor must have at least 10 years of experience as a professor in their respective fields.

Officials stated that the bill will undergo detailed scrutiny in the relevant committee before being presented for approval in the provincial assembly. Once passed by the assembly, the final approval will be granted by the Governor of Punjab.

The proposed change is part of broader efforts to reform governance structures in medical education institutions and ensure experienced leadership in key academic positions across the province.
