KARACHI (Dunya News) – The preparation for the second phase of local government elections in seven districts of Karachi, six districts of Hyderabad and three districts of Thattha has been completed. The polling will be held on Jan 15 (Sunday). 

Hyderabad is the second biggest city of Sindh province, which is administratively divided into six districts - Hyderabad district, Dadu district, Jamshoro district, Matiari district, Tandu Allahyar district and Tandu Mohammad Khan district. 

In the second phase of the local government elections, the contest will be held on 6,774 seats of chairmen, vice chairmen and general members of union committees in Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Tandu Allahyar, Tandu Muhammad Khan and Dadu, while 11,226 candidates will be vying for the slots. 

The total number of voters in Hybderabad district is more than 3.4 million and 2,551 candidates will be contesting the local government elections for 128 seats of chairmen and vice chairmen, 491 for general members and wards and 160 for union council seats. 

The candidates of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and others are contesting in Hyderabad, however, the PPP has won unopposed in 26 seats of chairmen and vice chairmen, while the party still requires 55 more seats for a clear majority in the election of mayor of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. 

On the other hand, despite being the second biggest party in Hyderabad, the MQM-P still needs 81 seats. 

A total of 368,000 voters will participate in the election process in Matiari, the second district of Hyderabad, while elections are being held on three municipal committees, 30 union councils and five town committees of Jamshoro. 

A total of 2,674 polling stations have been set up for voting in the six districts of Hyderabad division, among them, 1,895 have been declared sensitive and 779 highly sensitive. On Jan 15, as many as 28,562 officers will perform duty for the elections and 25,000 police personnel will be deployed for security at the polling stations.
