KARACHI (Dunya News) - The Sindh High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the proposed 26th constitutional amendment.

Sindh High Court Chief Justice, Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui, presided over the hearing of the petition filed by lawyers against the amendment.

He remarked that the court could not intervene before the amendment is enacted.

The petitioner's lawyer argued that the draft of the constitutional amendment had been presented in the assembly.

In response, Chief Justice Siddiqui noted that the elected representatives of 240 million citizens were in the assembly, who had the power to do so.

The court inquired whether the lawyer had read the Supreme Court judgment on the Practice and Procedure Act.

Upon confirmation, Justice Siddiqui expressed disbelief that the lawyer would file such a petition despite this knowledge, questioning its admissibility.

The lawyer contended that the amendment posed a threat to public rights and the judiciary, suggesting that the draft should be debated among bar councils and lawyers’ organisations before proceeding.

Chief Justice Siddiqui asked which law proposed presenting the draft to bar councils and lawyers’ organisations. He also criticised the common practice of submitting petitions with minimal information.

He emphasized that they could not contradict the Supreme Court's decisions.

Ultimately, the court rejected the petition against the proposed 26th Constitutional Amendment.
