ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Poeples Party (PPP) and Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) have reached a consensus on draft of 26th constitutional amendment.

This was announced by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman while addressing a press conference along PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Tuesday.

Fazlur Rehman stated that the proposed constitutional amendment had been discussed, and an agreement had been reached with the PPP on the draft.

The JUI-F chief mentioned that a meeting with Nawaz Sharif is scheduled for tomorrow, where efforts will be made to reach a consensus.

He also highlighted Bilawal Bhutto's key role in achieving this agreement.

The JUI-F leader reaffirmed his rejection of the initial draft, which was dismissed previously and remains unacceptable today.

“Suggestions have been compiled and discussed, and the PPP has also prepared a similar draft. The differences between the two drafts have now been resolved successfully,” he held.

Fazlur Rehman announced that a consensus had been reached, and continuous contact was being maintained with PTI. He expressed confidence in gaining the full support of the house, though the final form of the draft will be awaited.

The JUI-F leader stressed the need for a non-controversial constitutional amendment and clarified that his party was not a signatory to the Charter of Democracy.

He acknowledged the significant damage caused in the past and stressed the need for serious reflection.

Fazlur Rehman further said that protecting the constitution is the responsibility of all patriotic parties, and the draft has successfully removed any content that weakens the country. The focus is not on benefiting individuals like himself, Bilawal Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif, or the PTI founder, but on serving the national interest.

He also stated that he is open to suggestions from lawyers and cautioned against repeating past mistakes, as was done at the behest of those in black coats.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed gratitude to Maulana Fazlur Rehman and shared that they had been invited to dinner by Nawaz Sharif tomorrow. He is hopeful that a consensus will be reached with Nawaz Sharif as well.

The PPP chairman mentioned that Fazlur Rehman hopes for an agreement with PTI too, and that consensus will bring improvements.

“PPP and JUI have always played key roles in successful constitutional amendments, and their working relationship will strengthen further. Once consensus with Nawaz Sharif is achieved, it will be shared with the media,” he added.

He said that the constitutional amendment is not about any individual and that there is no time constraint. He expressed hope that the final draft approved by the parliament will be theirs, stating that he's in no rush, having waited since 2006.

He reiterated that PTI should play a positive role in politics. He said that if PTI agrees, it will be welcomed, and he won't set any deadlines. He criticized PTI for creating obstacles instead of engaging in constructive politics.
