Federal minister stressed zero tolerance for corruption
ISLAMABAD – After taking charge of the Ministry of Railways, Hanif Abbasi announced that four special Eid trains will be launched for the public, starting from the 25th of Ramazan. Passengers will be given up to 20 percent relief on fares during the Eid days.
He stated that the Prime Minister's policies on the privatization of trains would be implemented. He acknowledged issues at several stations, such as broken scanners leading to smuggling and theft, and promised to strengthen railway police similar to the CTD force.
Hanif Abbasi emphasised doubling cargo services, addressing railway challenges, and enhancing security under the supervision of the IG Railways Police.
He mentioned ongoing talks with two to three countries regarding the ML-1 project, with government decisions yet to be finalised.
The federal minister stressed zero tolerance for corruption, stating his priority is to set targets for the department. He highlighted a plan to connect Thar Coal through cargo trains and confirmed an order for 245 coaches from China, while also building their own coaches and locomotives.
Speaking as a PML-N leader, he noted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's promises were fulfilled, with reserves now at $16 billion compared to $4 billion earlier. Inflation, once at 38%, has dropped to 1.5%.
He added that the interest rate, previously 22%, is now at 12% and is expected to hit single digits within six months. Remittances stand at $18 billion, with a target to push them to $35 billion.
