KARACHI (Dunya News) – Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh chapter (PPP) has announced a protest against the Cholistan canal project on March 25.

PPP leader Nisar Khuhro stated that rallies would be held at all district headquarters across Sindh.

He emphasised that the PPP would not allow anyone to construct a canal on the Indus River, adding that party will organize gatherings and street protests against the canal project.

Nisar Khuhro further added that by initiating work on the Cholistan Canal, the federal government has revived memories of authoritarianism.

Sindh Assembly passes resolution against Cholistan canal, other projects

A resolution declaring the construction of Cholistan Canal and five other irrigation projects illegal, citing violation of the 1991 Water Accord, has been passed by the Sindh Assembly on March 14.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah stated that these new canal projects threatened Sindh’s rightful share of water.

He emphasised that the province would not accept any encroachment on its water rights.

The resolution calls on the federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to ensure fair water distribution as per the 1991 agreement.

Murad Ali Shah warned that these projects could lead to an environmental crisis in Sindh, impacting agriculture, the economy, and daily life due to water shortage.

The Sindh government remains firm in its stance, steering that no compromise will be made on Sindh’s share of Indus River water.
