ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook Islamabad and several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, sending tremors across multiple cities and prompting residents to move out of homes and offices in fear.

The earthquake was felt in several parts of the country, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre.

The tremors were reported in Islamabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Charsadda, Bajaur, Shangla, Buner and Lower Dir, among other areas. Residents in affected locations experienced the shaking, with many stepping outside buildings as the impact of the quake was felt.

According to seismic authorities, the earthquake recorded a magnitude of 5.3, with its depth measured at 174 kilometres beneath the surface. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region.

The Hindu Kush region is known for frequent seismic activity due to its location near the boundary of major tectonic plates, with earthquakes in the area often felt across parts of Pakistan and neighbouring regions.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed that tremors were experienced in various cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, along with the federal capital, Islamabad.

Initial reports indicated that no casualties or property damage had been reported following the earthquake. However, relevant departments and authorities remained engaged in monitoring the situation and assessing any possible impacts.

Emergency and disaster management authorities continued to keep track of developments after the tremors, while further updates were awaited regarding the situation in affected areas.

The earthquake follows a pattern of seismic activity regularly observed in the region, where tremors from Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush area are frequently felt in northern Pakistan.
