LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has claimed that the crime rate in the province has declined by 70 percent, saying the government has taken difficult decisions to improve law and order and ensure compliance with the law.
Speaking in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said the government had tried to ensure that the law was followed by every segment of society. She said people were happy when laws were enforced on others but often found it difficult to comply with them themselves.
She said making people accustomed to wearing helmets was a difficult decision, adding that it was painful when motorcycle riders met with accidents. She said she also faced criticism for taking action against criminal elements, but she could have chosen to sit back simply to avoid criticism.
Maryam Nawaz said incidents of harassment involving children were extremely distressing, adding that witnessing such incidents could shake one’s faith in humanity.
The chief minister said providing a safe environment was not an easy task and that she had taken difficult decisions while putting herself at risk. She said all eyes were now on Punjab, adding that billions of rupees had been spent to improve law and order in the province.
According to Maryam Nawaz, terrorists had night-vision cameras, prompting the government to provide the same equipment to the police. She said checkpoints had also been established to secure the provincial borders.
Maryam Nawaz said cases of robbery and other crimes used to be reported from the riverine areas in the past. However, she claimed that the riverine belt was now crime-free and the writ of the state had been established there.
