KARACHI (Dunya News) – The government has formally approved the import of 750,000 metric tonnes of wheat to meet domestic requirements, while the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has issued an international tender for the purchase. The move comes amid concerns over wheat supplies and domestic demand.
According to the TCP, the imported wheat must be sourced from the latest crop, while offers from international suppliers will only be considered if they are for a minimum quantity of 50,000 metric tonnes.
Under the tender, the wheat will be delivered to the ports of Karachi and Gwadar on a Cost and Freight (CFR) basis. Bids for the wheat import can be submitted until September 16 and will be opened on the same day.
The TCP said the imported wheat would be distributed among the provinces according to their requirements. Sindh will receive 300,000 metric tonnes, Punjab 250,000 tonnes and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 200,000 tonnes.
The government’s decision to import 750,000 metric tonnes was approved amid concerns over domestic wheat availability. According to government sources, the imported stock will be allocated among the provinces based on their respective requirements.
The TCP’s tender requirements specify that the wheat must be milling wheat from the current crop and meet prescribed quality standards. The corporation has previously issued tenders for the import of current-crop wheat under specifications set by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.
According to the Economic Survey 2025-26, Pakistan’s annual wheat consumption is around 31.3 million tonnes, while wheat production during the previous fiscal year stood at 29.61 million tonnes.
The import is therefore aimed at helping meet the gap between domestic production and consumption requirements, with the imported wheat to be distributed among the provinces according to their needs.
