Rain delays the PSL 11 match between Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans in Lahore, with a shortened 13-over contest planned if conditions improve.
LAHORE (Dunya News) – Persistent rain disrupted proceedings ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11 encounter between Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, delaying the toss and casting uncertainty over the start of play.
Originally scheduled for an 8:30 PM toss followed by an 8:45 PM start, officials later indicated that, if conditions improve, the match could be reduced to a 13-overs-per-side contest to salvage play.
Ground staff swiftly moved into action as rain swept across the venue, covering the pitch and key playing areas with tarpaulins in a bid to prevent further damage. Despite these efforts, the outfield remained wet, with officials closely monitoring weather conditions before making a decision on whether play can commence.
The delay has raised the prospect of a complete washout, which would mark the second abandoned fixture in this year’s tournament. Earlier in the week, the clash between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi on March 31 was called off without a ball being bowled due to relentless rain.
With the PSL schedule already under pressure, another abandoned match could have implications for team standings and net run rate calculations as the tournament progresses.
Tight head-to-head rivalry
The fixture carries added significance given the closely contested history between the two sides. Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans have met 21 times in PSL history, with Multan holding a narrow edge with 11 victories compared to Lahore’s 10.
Both teams entered the contest aiming to strengthen their positions in the points table, making the weather interruption an unwelcome setback for players and supporters alike.
Squads
Lahore Qalandars, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, named a strong squad featuring Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Sikandar Raza, Haris Rauf and Mustafizur Rahman among others. The side also includes international names such as Daniel Sams and Dunith Wellalage, alongside emerging domestic talent.
Multan Sultans, captained by Ashton Turner with Shan Masood as vice-captain, field a balanced line-up comprising Steve Smith, Mohammad Nawaz, Tabraiz Shamsi, Josh Philippe and Peter Siddle. The squad blends experienced internationals with promising local players, aiming to maintain their edge in the head-to-head record.
