(Web Desk) - An olive tree in Greece, believed to be one of the oldest in the world, continues to bear fruit despite being thousands of years old.
Known as the Olive Tree of Vouves, the tree is located in the village of Ano Vouves on the island of Crete. According to experts, the tree is approximately 3,000 years old, while some researchers estimate its age to be as much as 4,000 years, meaning it predates the time of Prophet Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him) by more than two millennia.
The ancient tree has a massive and uniquely shaped trunk, with a circumference of around 12.5 metres (41 feet) and a diameter of nearly 4.6 metres. Despite its extraordinary age, the olive tree remains alive and continues to produce olives to this day.
In 1997, the Olive Tree of Vouves was officially declared a natural monument by Greek authorities. An olive museum has also been established nearby to showcase the historical and cultural significance of olive cultivation in the region.
Beyond its age, the tree holds symbolic importance as well. Its branches have been used on several historic occasions, including Olympic ceremonies, highlighting its enduring connection to human civilisation and tradition.
