The incident occurred in Silver River in Marion County, where a group of swimmers encountered a crocodile. According to eyewitnesses, the woman tried to fend off the animal with a paddle from a paddleboard to save her life, but the crocodile attacked and dragged her underwater.
People in nearby boats heard the woman's screams and immediately rushed to help. The crocodile eventually released her, after which a tourniquet was quickly applied with a rope to control the bleeding. She was then taken to a nearby boat ramp.
Emergency medical personnel took the woman from the boat and transported her to a local hospital, where doctors performed emergency treatment to stabilize her condition. Her right arm was later amputated. She was subsequently taken home, where her condition was reported to be improving.
Following the incident, authorities temporarily banned boating and swimming in the Silver River, while officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission began searching for the crocodile involved in the attack.
Authorities said a male crocodile measuring about 9 feet 8 inches was captured on August 9 and relocated away from the area. The river was subsequently reopened to boats and swimmers.
Authorities have warned residents and tourists that crocodiles can be found in various waterways across all 67 counties of Florida and urged people to strictly follow safety measures when visiting such areas.
Experts advise people to swim only in designated areas and during daylight hours in waters where crocodiles are present. They also recommend keeping pets away from the water's edge and never feeding wild crocodiles.
