LAHORE (Dunya News) - The controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), civil society and a notable journalist organisation.
The petition was moved by the Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar and others through Advocate Azhar Siddiqui in which the provincial government, chief secretary and others were made respondents.
The petition said that the PECA was a violation of the Article 19-A of the Constitution, and it doesn't define what fake news is, fearing it would be used politically on the pretext of fake news.
It was stated that the journalists would now be asked to reveal their sources, which it pleaded, should never be asked.
The petitioner pleaded to declare the PECA null and void while requesting the court to suspend any actions taken under the controversial act until the court made a decision.
