Summary Punjab’s disaster authority issues heat alert, warning of temperatures reaching 52°C and urging precautions across the province.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a province-wide alert warning of a sharp rise in temperatures across Punjab, with officials cautioning that the coming weeks could bring extreme heat conditions.

According to PDMA Director General Umar Javed, the months of May and June are expected to be the hottest of the year, with temperatures in southern Punjab potentially reaching as high as 52°C. He noted that average temperatures during this period are likely to remain between 43°C and 45°C, while recent days have already recorded levels 2 to 4 degrees above normal.

The alert highlights the likelihood of a mild heatwave affecting southern districts between 29 April and 3 May. In contrast, upper parts of the province are expected to experience weather changes due to a system of western winds. These conditions are forecast to influence the region from the night of 27 April until 29 April, and again between 3 and 5 May.

Officials indicated that the western weather system may bring a slight drop in temperatures in upper Punjab, with a decrease of 2 to 4 degrees anticipated. However, the broader trend points towards sustained high temperatures across most parts of the province.

PDMA has urged heightened caution, particularly for children, women and the elderly, who are considered most vulnerable to extreme heat. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, remain hydrated and take preventive measures during peak daytime hours.

Farmers have also been directed to align agricultural practices with the changing weather conditions, ensuring crops are protected from heat stress and water shortages. Authorities emphasised the importance of timely irrigation and field management to minimise potential losses.

All relevant departments have been placed on alert, with instructions issued to maintain round-the-clock staffing at District Emergency Operation Centres. Emergency services, including Rescue 1122, have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure rapid response in case of heat-related incidents.

The motorway police have also been tasked with issuing traffic advisories and assisting travellers during extreme weather conditions. In case of emergencies, citizens have been advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1129 for assistance.
