Summary Punjab has reduced traffic fines and abolished jail terms for multiple violations, replacing strict penalties with lower fines under a new gazette notification issued Monday.
LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has issued a gazette notification introducing major relief for motorists by reducing traffic fines and abolishing imprisonment for several violations.
According to the notification released by the Punjab Law Department, penalties under previous ordinances have been significantly revised, with a clear shift from harsh punishments to lighter monetary fines.
Under the new law, offences related to driving licences that previously carried fines ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs100,000 along with jail terms will now attract fines between Rs5,000 and Rs10,000, with imprisonment removed.
Similarly, violations such as one-way driving, which earlier included up to six months in jail or heavy fines, will now result in a fixed fine of Rs5,000 without any custodial sentence.
In cases of underage driving, offenders will face a fine of Rs10,000, while the vehicle may be impounded and handed over to a licensed individual.
For vehicles operating without a fitness certificate, penalties have been reduced to a Rs5,000 fine, and such vehicles will only be permitted to travel to designated inspection stations.
Overloading in public service vehicles — including passengers travelling on rooftops or hanging from sides — will also incur a Rs5,000 fine, replacing earlier stricter penalties that included imprisonment.
Officials said the revised framework aims to ease the burden on citizens while maintaining enforcement through financial penalties rather than custodial measures.
