Summary Says JI to march on Islamabad on September 20 for the withdrawal of petroleum levy
LAHORE (Dunya News) - Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has announced that the party will march towards Islamabad on September 20, saying the government has failed to accept its demands despite four rounds of negotiations.
Addressing a sit-in here on Thursday, Hafiz Naeem said JI would proceed to Islamabad and that convoys from different parts of the country would participate in the march.
He said convoys would depart from Karachi, Quetta, Chitral, Kalam and various parts of Punjab.
He added that a train march from Karachi would travel to Islamabad via Multan and Lahore.
According to the JI emir, the government is placing an increasing financial burden on the public through the petroleum levy, while taxes are being collected from poor and salaried segments of society.
Hafiz Naeem said the government had not provided an effective response to JI's position during the negotiations and remained unwilling to accept the party's demands.
He also praised the participation of women and children in the sit-ins, claiming that public participation in the protests was increasing with each passing day.
The JI emir reiterated the party's demand for the abolition of the petroleum levy and further relief for consumers through reductions in petrol prices.
