ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired an important meeting on Thursday to review the overall situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and discuss possible measures to address the prevailing challenges.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar attended the meeting.
According to sources, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi briefed the prime minister on the security situation and terrorism-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar briefed the meeting on the constitutional and legal aspects of Governor’s Rule, a national government and the imposition of an emergency in the province.
The prime minister was also briefed on the security situation along the Afghan border and recent terrorism incidents.
Sources said Rana Sanaullah and Amir Muqam briefed the prime minister on the political situation and ongoing contacts. The premier was also informed about back-channel contacts with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to sources, the meeting was told that the KP government had failed to maintain law and order in the province. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed concern over the security situation.
However, sources said no final decision regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been taken and all stakeholders would be consulted before any decision.
Further consultations on the constitutional aspects of Governor’s Rule or an emergency in KP are expected to take place during the day. An important meeting at the Aiwan-i-Sadr is also expected later in the evening or at night.
During the expected meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, the prime minister is likely to brief him on the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while political, constitutional and legal aspects of the matter will be discussed.
The situation regarding governance in the province and the KP government’s role in the ongoing fight against terrorism will also be reviewed.
