Google executives would attend the launch event
LAHORE (Web Desk) - Google Pay, the globally recognised digital payment platform, is being officially launched in Pakistan today (Wednesday), marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital payment ecosystem.
Google executives would attend the launch event, after which banks and fintech companies would gradually make the platform available to their customers, depending on their readiness.
This digital service would allow Pakistani users to link their bank-issued debit and credit cards to Google Wallet. With this feature, users would be able to make contactless payments seamlessly.
Pakistan’s payment infrastructure is still evolving, with most transactions being cash-based. However, Google Pay aims to shift this trend by providing a secure and convenient way for users to send and receive money digitally. The platform is fully compatible with local banks, enabling users to link their accounts and cards for everyday transactions.
What is Google Wallet?
Google Pay’s entry would accelerate the growth of Pakistan’s fintech ecosystem. Through open APIs, the platform would encourage innovation and collaboration between local banks and fintech service providers. Launched in 2011, Google Wallet is a digital wallet that allows users to store their debit or credit card details securely and make direct payments using their Android phones. Apart from payments, Google Wallet can store boarding passes, event tickets, ID cards, and much more, essentially replacing the need for a traditional wallet.
To use Google Wallet, users need to install the app, log in with their Google account, and add a payment method such as a credit or debit card. Once a card is added, they can make mobile payments at stores using Google Wallet. With Google Pay now available in Pakistan, digital transactions are set to become more efficient, secure, and widespread.
