National Cyber Emergency Response Team issues advisory
(Web Desk) - The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (National CERT) on Monday issued a high-priority cybersecurity alert in Pakistan amid escalating regional tensions.
According to the advisory, hostile actors, including state-sponsored groups, hacktivists, and opportunistic cybercriminals, may exploit the current situation to launch cyber operations targeting sensitive government, defense, and financial systems.
Threats are expected to include spear phishing, deepfake content, misinformation campaigns, DDoS attacks, malware, and ransomware targeting banking and corporate networks.
The advisory also highlighted the risk of government social media accounts being hacked, potentially spreading false or inflammatory content to the public.
The National CERT directed institutions to implement multi-factor authentication, enforce strict access controls, and ensure the timely installation of system updates and security patches.
It also emphasized that officials and citizens should exercise caution when interacting with suspicious links, attachments, or unverified applications.
Continuous monitoring, threat-hunting exercises, and regular security audits are strongly recommended to prevent potential breaches.
Experts warned that deepfakes and manipulated content could be used as part of psychological operations, increasing the risk of social and digital disruption.
Recent incidents have underscored the growing threat, with several Pakistani media channels and websites facing hacking attempts, briefly disrupting services.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also warned the public against sharing unverified or misleading information online, noting that such content could exacerbate cyber risks during sensitive times.
Cybersecurity specialists stress that in the current volatile geopolitical environment, vigilance and proactive defense are essential to protect national digital infrastructure and maintain public trust.
