Summary Etcamah works by blocking and degrading estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells
(Web Desk) - The United Arab Emirates has become the first country in the world to approve a new oral drug for breast cancer treatment targeting hormone-resistant cases.
The Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) has become one of the first regulators to give the go-ahead to AstraZeneca's Etcamah, which is aimed at patients who have particular types of advanced breast cancer, which can lead to the development of a genetic mutation.
Health experts say the drug offers new hope for patients who develop genetic changes that make hormone-based treatments ineffective during the course of the disease.
Etcamah works by blocking and degrading estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells. These receptors, in some tumors, act like a fuel switch that drives cancer growth and spread. By shutting down and eliminating these receptors, the drug interrupts the signaling pathway that supports tumor progression.
Medical authorities in the UAE stated that this mechanism could provide a significant advancement in targeted cancer therapy, particularly for hormone-resistant breast cancer cases.
