ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday held out olive branch to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by offering a parliamentary committee instead of a judicial commission.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting on Thursday, the prime minister asked the PTI to continue the negotiation process and the government was willing to form a parliamentary committee.

“We accepted their offer, constituted a committee, and initiated dialogue with the help of the (National Assembly) speaker,” said the prime minister.

He said the committee asked the PTI to present demands in writing and the government also agreed to come up with a written response but the PTI refused continue the proceedings.

He recalled the parliamentary committee formed in 2018 under the former government to finalise the terms of reference (ToRs) to investigate the election rigging allegations.

Imran Khan announced formation of a parliamentary committee and we (opposition) agreed to that, he said, adding that committee also should complete probe.

“It takes two to tango. This dialogue should move forward so that the country can progress,” said Sharif. He said the country could not afford more turmoil. 

He said terrorism was taking a heavy toll on the country and army was doing a great job of fighting the scourge. He said the soldiers were valiantly fighting against terrorists. 

The prime minister also highlighted human smuggling menace, which recently claimed lives of more than 40 lives of Pakistanis. He said investigation was being carried out to reach the perpetrators. 

As for the economic situation, he said he wanted to see 2pc cut in policy rate as against 1pc announced by the State Bank of Pakistan.
