LAHORE (Dunya News) – The city is expected to have light rain this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) due to a westerly wave.

The Met Office says a westerly wave in the country may generate light rain in Lahore and adjacent areas on Feb 1 and 2.

Thursday’s minimum temperature was 9 degrees Celsius and the maximum could go up to 21 degrees Celsius.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts mainly cold and dry weather in most parts of the country. It expects very chilly weather in hilly areas during the next 24 hours (Friday).

Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are expected to have cloudy conditions with chances of light rain and snowfall.

DROUGHT ALERT

Earlier, the PMD issued a drought alert for parts of the country, warning of worsening conditions due to below-normal rainfall and rising temperatures.

This followed an earlier advisory issued on Dec 9, 2024. According to the PMD, rainfall from Sept 1, 2024, to Jan 15, 2025, was 40 percent below normal across Pakistan, with Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab being the most affected provinces.

The rainfall deficits of 52 percent, 45 percent, and 42 percent, respectively, have been recorded. The drought will particularly affect rain-fed areas.

In Punjab, mild drought conditions have been observed in Attock, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Sindh is experiencing similar conditions in Ghotki, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, Karachi, Hyderabad, and Tharparkar.

Balochistan’s affected areas include Ormara, Kharan, Turbat, Panjgur, Lasbela and Dalbandin.

The PMD advised farmers to take preemptive measures to mitigate the impact of the drought.
