Saad Rafique urges consultation with media bodies on PECA
Pakistan
He emphasised the need to engage with representative media bodies to address concerns over PECA
LAHORE (Dunya News) - Senior PML-N leader and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has called for consultations with media organisations regarding the recently passed amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
In a statement shared on social media, Rafique emphasised the need to engage with representative media bodies to address concerns over the controversial law.
He also suggested that the right to appeal against tribunal decisions should be granted to high courts to ensure judicial oversight.
Highlighting the potential risks of such laws, Rafique noted, “History shows that laws crafted to control others often end up being used against their own creators as times change.”
His remarks come amid widespread protests by journalists across the country.
Demonstrations have been held in Multan, Burewala, Jahanian, and South Waziristan, following the call of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).
Journalists nationwide continue to demand the repeal of the PECA amendments, citing threats to press freedom and freedom of expression.
