Summary KP chief minister urges prison reforms starting at Adiala Jail, demanding family access and improved medical care for Imran Khan.
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi called for prison reforms to begin at Adiala Jail, urging authorities to improve facilities and ensure the rights of former prime minister Imran Khan.
Speaking at a prison reforms conference in Islamabad, Afridi said Imran Khan was being unjustly imprisoned and should be allowed to meet his family. He also called for treatment by his personal physicians and better medical care.
The chief minister urged authorities to establish a proper waiting area for visitors outside Adiala Jail and facilitate video calls between Imran Khan and his sons. He further said that if meetings with Khan's sisters could not be arranged, force, including water cannons, should not be used against them.
Afridi said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was providing prisoners with all basic facilities in line with the vision of the PTI founder. He criticized restrictions on political gatherings, claiming that FIRs were being registered against participants, including minors under terrorism charges. He added that prison reforms should start with Adiala Jail, where Imran Khan is currently incarcerated.
The conference was also addressed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi.
In his address, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi welcomed participants and said progress had been made in reducing the backlog of pending cases. He stressed that improving prison conditions is a constitutional responsibility of provincial governments and that protecting prisoners' rights remains a key pillar of the justice system.
The chief justice said accountability within the justice system was being strengthened, while access to healthcare and clean water in prisons was essential. He added that provincial committees had been established to help improve prison conditions across the country.
