Summary She described the breakdown of talks as a missed opportunity for political confidence-building and stability after years of political confrontation.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman has said negotiations between the government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) collapsed after the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government refused to sign an agreed draft on counter-terrorism cooperation with the federal government.
In a statement on X, Rehman said four drafts had been agreed upon during the negotiations, with changes incorporated to address PTI’s concerns. She said the government had repeatedly asked the KP government and PTI’s senior federal leadership to participate directly in the talks.
According to Rehman, neither the KP chief minister nor any representative of the provincial cabinet attended the negotiations. She said that if the KP government had a workable alternative draft, it should have presented it through the negotiating process.
She described the breakdown of talks as a missed opportunity for political confidence-building and stability after years of political confrontation. She said improved coordination between the KP and federal governments, along with guidance from PTI’s senior leadership in Islamabad, could have helped make significant progress.
“This was not a unilateral matter,” Rehman said, stressing that the government side had remained engaged throughout the negotiations.
Rehman maintained that the government side did not formally end the negotiations and kept the door open until the other side stopped returning to the talks.
